Family found guilty of Jaswinder Sidhu’s murder

Jaswinder Sidhu was an Indo-Canadian and worked as a beautician in Canada. Jaswinder was murdered in an honor killing. Jaswinder fell in love with Sukhwinder Singh Sidhu, an auto driver whom she met on a visit to the city of Ludhiana, Punjab in India in 1994. The trip to India was to finalise and arrange a marriage for her but she married her lover secretly in1999. The family was completely against this marriage as Sukhwinder was from the lower caste and they even convinced her to get divorce and forced her to sign a document which stated that the marriage was not valid.

Jaswinder and Sukhwinder were attacked while they were travelling. Sukhwinder was beaten and left to die but he survived. Jaswinder was kidnapped by the group of men who slit her throat and her body was found in a canal. Her mother and uncle were arrested in 2012 and accused and held in custody for arranging an honor killing.

In 2014, Jaswinder’s mother and uncle were ordered to surrender to the police in India as they had enough evidence of committing the murder. The Canadian court was reassured by the Indian court that the duo would not face a death penalty or threats. In January 2015, the former judge wrote to the Indian court and received the assurance. Later, this decision was cancelled as the Canadian judge feared the duo might be tortured in India. The former Canadian judge stated that the duo will face trial in Canada.
