Hillary makes history by being first woman to have presidential nominee

Accepting the Democrat nomination, Hillary Clinton became the first female presidential nominee in the history of the United States. She will be leading the political party in the race for the White House. In this way, the Democrats have placed their candidate against Republican opponent, Donald Trump.

Clinton, former First Lady and secretary of state was able to secure all the 2, 383 delegates she needed to win the nomination. The Democrats cheered when Bernie Sanders announced that it was official and unanimous. “I move that Hillary Clinton be selected as the nominee of the Democratic Party for president of the United States,” he said.

The final count of delegates was 2,842 for Clinton, 1,865 for Sanders and 56 “no votes".  This would be the second time the party makes political history as they were the ones who backed Barack Obama, the first African American president. Rep. John Lewis of Georgia mentioned that the party is now moving forward with Clinton´s nomination.

"Tonight, tonight, on this night, we will shatter that glass ceiling again. We're the party of tomorrow, and we will build a true democracy in America," Lewis said.

But Clinton´s nomination was not taken happily by all Democrats. After his speech, Sanders was received by some of his delegates that paraded away against Clinton´s nomination.

“I’m just not there yet in terms of supporting Hillary, because her words are only her words, and I don’t fully trust that she’ll act on our agenda,” said Ingrid Olson, 38, a delegate from Iowa.  Sanders lost Iowa in the first-of-the-nation caucuses.

The ceremony included speakers that praised Clinton’s achievements, along with personal stories of success. This, in an attempt to do away with the distrust that many democrats have towards the new nominee.
