Family wants an inquest into Chazz Petrella’s Suicide

The suicide of 12 year-old Chazz Petrella is one of the most heartbreaking stories in a long time. The 12 year-old and his family struggled handling his mental health concerns, and the family has revealed that a lot of this struggle was with Ontario itself. Petrella suffered from anxiety, and was diagnosed with ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), and ODD (oppositional defiant disorder).

Mrs. Petrella’s experience with mental health facilities ended with her son’s crisis, when the boy tried to jump out of the car window. After police helped subdue Chazz, a battle began with mental health concerns and the lack of suitable mental health facilities. When a family can’t find proper assistance for their child, the system needs work. For Ontario, this is shown through the experience of many families. On this front, Petrella’s family sent a request for an inquest to the Ontario Chief Coroner to have the death of Chazz and circumstances surrounding his death looked into further.

With such a tragic result, and an overall feeling of helplessness when it comes to insufficient mental health resources, the hope is that this will call attention into these mental health and facility concerns, or lack thereof. While this tragedy hopefully brings about stronger care for Ontario, the world as well should take note. Mental health resources are scattered throughout the world, but their potency range heavily between themselves. In some areas, facilities and health workers for mental health issues and concerns are terribly underfunded and sometimes answers and treatment are not even available for some cases. Mental health facilities and processes can always be improved, and are desperately needed, which comes to light after horrible tragedies as the loss of Chazz Petrella.
