Five countries named the most corrupt by Transparency International

Transparency International bases its index of corruption on the public sector. Corruption is a disease that affects all countries, not one is free from it.  However, some fare much better than others.  The ranking is like a school grade, with 100% being the best grade and 0 being the worst. These are the five top countries when it comes to corruption.

5. South Sudan

With a corruption index of 15, the Republic of South Sudan is still a victim of its young age.  The country declared independence from Sudan in 2011.  Due to it been a new country, it does not have the strong republic structures other nations have.  This has led to greedy politicians to take advantage of resources, leaving the country in its underdeveloped status.  According to the World Bank, 80% of South Sudan GDP comes from oil, a situation that is taken advantage of by international oil companies.

4. Afghanistan

The Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, ranking 12, is a very difficult country to study.  A very weak governance has placed it as a highly difficult country to govern.  Its former president, Hamid Karzai was notoriously corrupt as he has been reported to taking bags of money from the American military.  The country is also a producer of heroin, which has given wealth to a few.

3. Sudan

A country that has historically being devastated by conflicts between factions and ethnic groups.  Its corrupt officials, members of the National Congress Party keep 64.5% of its population below the poverty line.

Tie 1. North Korea

North Korea has a greater investment in military than any of its social programs. This is to keep appearances before the rest of the world and to keep its citizens in check. The country has been brought to the ground by Kim Jong Sun, Kim Jong Il, and now Kim Jung Un.

Tie 1. Somalia

Somalia is considered the most unstable country in the world. However, due to politicians not disclosing enough information to keep corruption under wraps, there is little known about what the real situation is.  Life in Somalia is tough with a pretty loose government.  The country is actually run by clans and warlords that keep the country in constant hostility. With such an unstable government, any hopes for social programs is difficult.
